Graeae has a strong track record creating work for and with children and young people. We believe in a universal entitlement to engage with the arts – as creators, participants and audiences.
Each year we present a diverse, inclusive outreach and workshop programme led by our artists in collaboration with strategic partners.
Outreach
Graeae is committed to a programme of widening participation within formal and informal education from primary schools through to higher education.
We are developing a pool of deaf and disabled workshop leaders to deliver extensive outreach programmes, which run alongside touring productions and as stand-alone workshops and residencies. Over the past year, we have delivered over 100 workshops to more than 1,200 participants across the UK, ranging from residencies at organisations like Penn Hall School in Wolverhampton and The Orpheus Centre in Surrey, to theme-based workshops in London-based schools (for example Camden Community School, Linden Lodge, Oaklodge and George Green School), to ‘aesthetics of access’ workshops at distinguished, industry-focused institutions such as Mountview Drama School and Central School of Speech and Drama.

Graeae is committed to creating an environment where everyone has equal access to the arts: by providing access support for all creative and learning situations; by empowering young disabled artists to pursue a career in the arts through inspiring role models; and by exploring the “aesthetics of access”.
By doing this, we hope to nurture creative platforms for a wide range of performers and develop future audiences.
Our training and consultancy programmes include:

* Specialist workshops in inclusive teaching, rehearsal techniques, creative access and workshop facilitation for directors, casting directors, producers, youth theatre and workshop leaders

The Film Bunch
Making & presenting films accessible to a Deaf and hard of hearing audience
The Film Bunch hold monthly short film screenings, all of which include captioning, as well as holding networking events (Deaf and hard of hearing friendly). They also invite new film submissions, but all films but include English captions.

Training resources
Scene Change and Into the Scene
Scene Change and Into the Scene, in partnership with a number of drama schools including Mountview, Rose Bruford, ALRA, Central School of Speech & Drama. Delivering skills-based workshops to aspiring disabled actors, looking at how the curriculum, teaching and assessment of theatre arts training can be made accessible to all students.
A Teachers’ Handbook and DVD – a detailed guide to inclusive teaching practice marking the legacy of learning from Missing Piece, Scene Change and Into the Scene.
Sightlines
This ACE funded film written and directed by Tim Gebbels examines and demystifies the practice of providing access for blind and visually impaired actors. The DVD is not meant as a definitive guide but we hope it will provide basic information and help to develop inclusive casting. You can order one by contacting the Graeae office here.
Acting and Auditioning – A practical guide
As part of Graeae’s 2009-2012 Continuing Professional Development Programme Graeae has been working with casting agent Sarah Hughes to launch a new online guide for actors who are seeking training and work in theatre,film and TV.
In Acting and Auditioning – A practical guide, Sarah and Graeae offer professional advise for actors including: accessing quality training; tailoring a CV; seeking out casting agents and preparation for theatre, film and TV auditions.
